I did find a way to get around the water wasted from the purging of the tank.

Instead of running the purge line to your kitchen drain pipe all you have to do is secure the purge line to one of the three fiber filters that run vertically on the system using a couple of zip ties and have the end of the tube drain into a bucket.

We suggest using a 5-gallon steel tub instead of a bucket because the tub is low enough to fit under most cabinets.

How exactly do you do underslab plumbing repair? Tradesmen use a specialized machine and inspect and clean the pipe of debris. Then they feed a polyester sock like pipe down the existing pipes you already have. With epoxy and air pressure, a new pipe is set inside the old pipe in about 2 hours.

It’s a really cool process and I am excited to show you each step down below.

Are you ready to see why you don’t need a jackhammer to effectively repair broken pipes under the slab of your home?

I know I am, so let’s get after it!

Tools and Machines

Now I’ll start off by telling you this: the machines and material used here are all professional grade – so don’t even think about buying this on Amazon or at home depot. But the good thing is professionals can do this quickly and affordably – much easier than ripping up all your concrete for sure!

The first thing that needs to be done is to inspect the pipes using a high-resolution camera and a cable and a light at the end.

And we also use an air chamber machine that will feed in our new pipe system

Professional grade epoxy is used

And the new pipe is actually a polyester material that will sit inside the old pipe

And we use a cutting head and snake to clean out our existing pipes before any work can be completed

So – those are the major tools and materials used in this process and I bet you have a ton of questions. I promise I’ll show you the whole process and you will understand everything really quickly!

Now let’s see how it all comes together.

Inspection

We first need to see how badly our pipe is damaged, and if we have any issues with roots that need to be cleared away.

We take our machine and the head  gets fished into the pipe

And you can see inside the pipe – looking for signs of damage.

Notice on the left-hand side of the camera you can tell exactly where you are, in feet. That what you’ll know where there are problem spots.

And see here where there is damage – some roots are breaking into our pipe!

We run our camera through the whole length of the pipe to determine the extent of the damage.

Once completed we can then run our cutter head down the pipe and clear away those pesky roots that have been causing all our problems.

The cutter head scrapes the inside of the pipe without damaging it. The sharp teeth easily cut away roots that have found their way into our PVC or metal pipe. Once that’s complete, we can run our new pipe into our existing pipe.

But you may be wondering “ How can a rigid pipe fit into our existing pipe”?

That’s a great question- so let’s answer it

The Pipe

Our new pipe actually begins its life as a polyester “sock”. Just think of it as a pipe, but flat.

We will insert the flat pipe (coated in resin) into our existing plumbing, that way it can fit through all the twists and turns.

And the resin will cure, turning the pipe hard on the outside, and smooth inside the pipe.

And this system is effective repairing pipes as damaged and broken as this one

Making It Happen

First, we prepare the epoxy and ensure that it mixed really thoroughly.

Once that is complete we pour the epoxy into our “sock” to prepare it. Once the polyester and epoxy are joined, we have about 45 minutes until it starts to harden.

Then, industrial rollers spread the epoxy evenly throughout the polyester material and down the tube, ensuring every square inch is coated.

And our machine makes this process possible. It’s a two-part machine consisting of air chambers.

This part of the chamber seals off the pipe on the outside

And this chamber puts air pressure inside the tube, to force it inside the existing pipe in your home.

And our pipe is actually backward. It unravels from inside out, so the soft looking material is facing outward as the air pressure if forced into the pipe.

And the air pressure being used hits the pipe here

And once the air pressure is engaged

The pipe starts to extend

Right into our old, damaged pipe

And that’s how we get our new pipe to sit in our old pipe, and this is the second stage of the repair.

We then repeat this process with an inflatable bladder

And that’s because our pipe is laying flat on its side inside our old pipe. The bladder will inflate with water inside the pipe and help it to cure in place

See how the bladder runs inside?

Now we use a different attachment that will run cold water into our bladder to inflate it to size. We will then switch the water over to hot water, and this will help cure the new pipe in place and make it rigid.

And once the hot water is run into the bladder it will take about two hours for our pipe to completely harden.

Finishing

To wrap up and complete our new pipe installation we must first remove our bladder from our pipe

And once this is extracted, we can inspect the pipe to make sure it is cured and there are no issues we need to fix. So we take out our trusty inspection camera and insert it back into out pipe again.

And you can see how perfectly smooth our new pipe is on the inside.

What a process for sure! I remember when you had to break up all the concrete to uncover a problem – the time involved, the cost and the mess… it was just crazy to think about it.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, that water in my buddies house somehow leaked into a storage area, causing some mildew on his clothes. He found this article pretty helpful.

In this article, we showed you a new technique for repairing damaged pipes and completing underslab plumbing repair. This method was such a time and money saver that I had to share it with you just in case you have this issue with your home.

He wants to install a deep sink in his garage and asked me how to connect pex to a faucet.  I don’t know how to do this type of job – so I searched for a guide on how to connect pex to a faucet and couldn’t find anything… So I’m going to write this how-to article and explain exactly what you need to connect pex to a faucet.

Here’s the basic process on how to connect pex to a faucet: Select the pex pipe you want to use and cut it to length. Then slide the pex ring over the pipe,  and place your fitting into the end of the pipe – securing the ring with the pex tool. The finished pex pipe then attaches to your faucet.

Now, what exactly is Pex? If you haven’t heard of pex piping that’s ok – neither did I. I’ll give you a short overview before we dive into the pex piping and the system itself – and then I’ll break down the tools you need and the process for installing pex piping on your own.

I know I am, so let’s dive in!

Pex History

Now you might be surprised to learn that PEX can trace its roots back over 100 years ago when the German inventor Dr. Engel developed a method to cross-link polyethelyne, which is what pex pipe is constructed of. Pex as we know it started hitting the markets in the 1970s in Europe and didn’t start being used in America until the 1990s. Traditional copper piping was used in American homes and still is in wide use today, but as you’ll see pex is easy to use and can save you thousands of dollars in labor.

Pex Tools and Materials

Since we are starting from square one, I want to give you an overview of the tools and the pipe you will need with the Pex system.

Here is Everything you’ll need:

Let’s break down each item piece by piece so you know exactly what you’ll need:

Pex pipes, assorted by color

Red is for hot water

White is neutral – can be either if you like

Blue is for cold water

Now that you know what tools you’ll need to install Pex, let’s dive into exactly how to install pex in your home step by step.

The Process

Installing Pex is super easy, as I’ll show you shortly. Just one word of caution: check with your local laws and regulations to ensure that pex is actually allowed in your city. You don’t want to install all this pex pipe just to have to remove it because of some weird regulation or ordinance.

Now here is the process to use with regular pex fittings:

Step 1

Slide the ring onto the pipe, you want a ⅛” to ¼’ gap from the top of the pex pipe to the ring

Step 2

Slide on your pex fitting to the end of the pipe

Step 3

Crimp down the ring with the pex ring tool. You want to make sure the tool is at a 90-degree angle to the pex pipe, and you’ll hear a “click” when you’ve successfully crimped the ring.

And that’s how you install a pex fitting! The hose is then installed right to your faucet hardware.

Calibration

Now, you will want to check your tool to ensure it’s crimping correctly, and you can do that with the go/ no-go tool.

You simply slide the “go” section over the pipe on the ring after it’s been crimped. We are using a ½” pipe, so we use the ½” measure and we can it slips over the ring with no problem.

Now flip the tool and see if the “no-go”section fits – if it does not “go” or fit, your tool is working correctly.

Shark Fittings

Let’s say you want to use the shark fittings instead of the traditional rings and fittings – and I recommend these on smaller jobs. They are really easy to use, but a bit more expensive, so with larger jobs go with the traditional fittings.

To use a shark fitting you need need to cut your pipe to length, then,

Use the depth gauge on the pipe corresponding to the fitting you need like this:

And it simply slides over the pipe.

You then mark the pex pipe at the end of the depth gauge with your sharpie

When that’s done you slide your shark bite fitting over the pex.

Check out the inside of the shark bite fitting: inside the fitting is a small piece of pipe which, when connected with the pex pipe keeps everything rigid.

And once the shark bite fitting is attached to the pex it will spin 360 degrees – that’s normal.

Oops, I made a mistake!

Let’s say you installed a fitting on a red pipe and actually were running cold water and needed to use a blue pipe. No problem – removing a fitting is really easy.

To remove the traditional fitting you’ll do it in three steps.

take the pex cutter and remove the section closest to the fitting

Then use the removal tool by sliding it close to the fitting and over the ring. Squeeze down to clip the ring, and spin the pex tube 180 degrees and repeat the process.

And your fitting will slide right out.

To remove shark fitting:

Use the shark fitting removal tool: (looks like a small donut)

And you’ll press it and pull out. The shark bit slips right off

It’s that easy to work with pex!

Conclusion

If you have to the opportunity to work with pex and your city or location allows it – then go for it!

Pex has so many advantages over copper it’s crazy that pex didn’t catch on faster… but then there would be a lot of unemployed plumbers I guess!

Once I learned about pex I gave up working with copper piping – and I love working with all types of metal. But when I learned how to connect pex to a faucet I knew it was game over.

There is no soldering, no mess, and no costly repairs when compared to copper pipe. Once I find an easier way to do something – I am all for it, and all for pex.

When joining steel tubing first, make sure that the two ends are square and beveled. Do this with a chop saw and a bench grinder. Once the edges are cleaned, line up the two pieces of the tube within a good size of angle iron and clamp down. This will ensure your pipe is square and ready to weld. 

Now there are two ways you can finish your steel tube: with a nice weld or nice and clean like the steel tube is one solid piece. I like to have my pipe looking clean and fresh personally, but if you want to drop a nice weld, check out this article and it will show you how to set beautiful dime welds with a MIG welder.

Now, we are going to cover, step by step exactly how to join these two pieces of tubing (keep in mind this principle works with steel tubing too!) and I’ll have some links in the article – that way you know exactly what equipment I am using and recommend.

So, let’s get busy and weld some pipe!

Preparation Is Key

When welding and joining steel tubing the biggest mistake I see anyone make is failing to prepare their joints. Could you not bevel the edges and still weld together two pieces of pipe? Sure, and you can also repair your bath tile with duct tape too.

What I’m saying is, not preparing your pipe ends is just a bad idea. You need the ends to line up square and give you some space for filler metal. So how exactly do you do that? Glad you asked!

Square Your Chop Saw

This is a really effective way to ensure your cuts are made a square (90 degrees)

Use a framing square

And line it up flat against the backstop of your chop saw

This will ensure your saw is a true 90 degrees and your cut is true.

Effectively Bevel Your Tubing

Now that your cut is true, lets bevel the tube to accept a weld.

You’ll want to use a bench grinder and just gently rotate your pipe against the abrasive edge at a 45-degree angle.

The result will be a smooth edge.

Now that you’ve prepped your material, you are ready to set up for the weld.

Oh, make sure that you have prepared both ends of your steel tube!

Welding Together Steel Tubing

Have you ever heard the old saying “There are many ways to skin a cat?” Yes, I know it’s a terrible saying but the thought behind it is this: you can do a task correctly in more than one way. It’s the same with welding, and specifically welding pipe. I like the method I am going to show you, but experiment, you might find another method suits you better.

The Jig

What your going to do here is set up a jig. This one is not overly complicated. In fact, it’s just a piece of thick angle iron set atop two magnets. I like using ½” angle that I have lying around the shop. It ensuring that my pipe is level and not rolling off my work table.

Here is a good picture of the setup:

Make sure you have some good clamps to hold your pipe in place. I like these clamps a lot – they effectively lock the pipe in place to the angle iron because of the “X” in place at the bottom of the clamp.

So when everything is set up, it’s going to look like this:

The Welder

There are a few ways you can weld your pipe (or steel tubing) together, MIG, TIG or Stick welding. Keep in mind that each process has it’s pro’s and con’s but in this article, we are going to talk about TIG welding our pipe. Oh- and we are going to be using a 1/16” tungsten and a 1/16 filler rod for this project.

The Process

Ok, let’s join this pipe!

You’ll want to set up everything in your jig as we discussed.

And once your steel tube is in place, you’ll want to tack both sides – for two tack welds opposite each other.

So, you’ll have three points holding everything together – the angle iron, the clamps, and the tack welds.

Now, you can drop a tack weld on the top of the pipe for your third tack weld

Then you can remove the clamps and roll over the pipe – it will still be even in the job because you have three solid tracks.

You are ready to drop one more tack weld for your 4th and final tack at the top of the pipe – so you should have a tack at your 12, 3, 6 and 9 positions if we can think of it as a time clock.

Finally, you’ll weld from tack to tack, completing the entire weld. Your finished weld should be continuous and look like this:

Just remember it will not look pretty!

The Finish

FInishing is quick and easy!

Grab your angle grinder and you’ll need a 36 grit, 80 grit, and some scotchbright pads.

You’ll want to make long, sweeping motions along the pipe, taking down the weld in small layers

Once you have taken down a majority of the weld, switch the grit to an 80 grit pad, this is a finer pad and will remove less metal and proving a smoother finish.

Now, before you finish – double check your pipe with your framing square.

This will show any high points that you may need to hit with the grinder and an 80 grit – or if its really subtle, the scotchbright.

And that’s it – you just learned about joining steel tubing!

Conclusion

In this short article, we talked about welding together some steel tubing. You can use this process when building railings, furniture or fences – really the only limit is what you can imagine. Keep in mind the more time and preparation you take in preparing your weld, the better the end result – which is why I highly recommend setting up a job and taking the time to square away your chop saw.

These are the timeless principles that will turn you into a master craftsman, increasing your metalworking skillsets and make people ask you “How did you learn to do that?”

To “weld” metal without a welder, you can join the pieces mechanically, use a spline or smaller piece of tubing to join tubes together or braze certain metals like Aluminum. To braze metals you’ll need a torch to heat the base metal and to melt fuller metal in between the joints you want to connect.

So I offer the distinction because you’re not actually welding – but you can produce a solid joint for many different uses at home or on a job site. In fact, sometimes it’s easier, cheaper and faster to make a mechanical joint or a brazed joint.

Now, we have a lot to ground to cover with this article, so pull out a pen and take some notes cause we are going to cover some skills you’ll be sure to use.

Preparation

Every great project had a solid foundation and great plans to back it up. So, before you even touch a torch and get ready to braze take a few minutes to prepare your workspace, review your plans and gather your materials.  If your looking for some great metalworking projects you can also check out this resource.

Denatured alcohol – to degrease and prep your metal for the weld.

File – a worthwhile investment for any metal working you’ll be doing.

Ok, now that we have everything you’ll need and your workbench set up, you’re ready to go.

Brazing Your Joint

Brazing is an effective method to use for joining metal, especially if you are building something like home furniture, desks, or anything that does not need to support an extreme load. Also, if you are interested in a full explanation of brazing, read this.

Now, I bet you’re ready to get down to work…

Let’s break this down to 6 easy to follow steps:

Step 1

Grab your Aluminum and make sure you cut it to length. The best tool to use here would be the chop saw – and since Aluminum is soft you can even get away with using a general purpose blade and not a specialized metal cutting blade.

Pro Tip: Notice how we just cut several lengths of Aluminum at once. This is commonly done in fabrication shops to save time, especially when you need several lengths cut at the same size.  This can also be used in your home shop too! It’s also called a gang cut.

Step 2

You’ll want to file down the edges and create a bevel, aka chamfering. You can use a hand file or a very fine grit pad and an angle grinder. I recommend a file in this situation because Aluminum is so soft.

Step 3

Clean your aluminum and prepare to braze. Take a wire brush and pass it over your metal on and near the point you will be brazing.

I would also hit it quickly with some denatured alcohol and a shop rag – just to remove any dust, grease or oils that may be on the surface. Remember – contamination can severally weaken a joint.

Step 4

Clamp together your aluminum before you start to braze your joints. You want to make sure everything is level and sit flush together – that way your project will be solid and well made.

Step 5

You want to heat the metal surrounding your joint and get it “warmed up” Aluminum melts at 1200 degrees and out filler rod will melt at about 700 degrees – so you’ll need work in small sections (one joint at a time) and move your torch back and forth to get a consistent, even heat.

Step 6

Once you’ve heated your metal, you’ll want to pass the filler rod on the joint like this;

Gently running it down the channel you made earlier with your file. You’ll know the metal is ready because your filler rod will melt evenly. If you are getting chunks of metal, then warm up the base metal a little bit more.

You may need to make more than one pass with your filler rod – it depends on how deep your channel is – to make as many passes as you need to fill the bevel so it’s level with the base material

And once it’s level – pass the torch over the joint once or twice to melt away any sloppy edges and clean it up a bit.

And you’ll repeat these simple 6 steps throughout your project on each joint that you have.

Remember to hit each side of your joint – with tubing this will be all 4 sides – so you have a strong joint for your finished project.

Now, let’s say you just don’t want to braze your metal, then here is a resource you can read which will give you a lot of different ideas on how to join materials together.

Conclusion

In this how-to article, you learned how to “weld” metal without a welder. Actually, you learned brazing, which can be considered the cousin of welding. You are joining metal together using one of the oldest metalworking techniques known to man – and an essential skill when working with soft metals like brass and bronze. Plus Brazing is really useful because you can complete this project in a small space without the electric you would need for a welder – so it’s a great skill to have for the DIY crowd.

Here are the basic tools needed for welding: A tape measure, a hood, solid leather gloves, safety glasses, an adjustable wrench, a cotton jacket, a welder, several clamps, a square, a scribe, a good file, and an angle grinder.

Now, although these are the basic items, you need to know which items to buy. Spending a few more dollars on a better-made item will save you money in the long term.

Tools For Welding: The 10  Essentials

In just a few words I am going to give you a list of the basic tools you’ll need to begin your metalworking journey. But keep in mind – metalworking is just that, a journey. As your skill increases and you become better and more proficient, you’ll upgrade tools, replace tools and add more of the same tools to your toolbox.

#1 Gloves and Hood

Gloves are essential because in metalworking there are little burs created when drilling, cutting, grinding and working with the material. Your hands will be in constant contact with the material, so you’ll want to make sure you’re protected.

A basic pair is good, but I recommend spending a few more dollars on a better pair.

Now, you need a hood to weld. Period. You can buy a basic hood to get you started – it will darken when you weld and protect your eyes from the UV light from the Arc, which is very important.

#2 Tape Measure

In order to build anything effectively, you’ll need to measure it accurately. I would suggest you don’t skimp on a good measure tape – the ones you buy at value stores can be off by ⅛” or more. Why risk ruining all of your hard work on a cheap tape measure? It’s just not worth it.

Also, I would suggest one between 25 and 30 feet. You can use a smaller one in the field, but a good 30’ tape measure is essential in your home shop.

#3 Hammers

A good chipping hammer and a basic hammer is all you need to get yourself started. You can upgrade and get different, specialized hammers later down the road on your metalworking journey.

#4 C – Clamps

This is the one tool you will never have enough of. Ever. I promise that you will use every C clamp you own and then some more. Buy these often and replace them if they ever bend or break on you. You will use these to clamp your work as you weld or secure it to a work table.

#5 Adjustable Wrench

There are many uses for the adjustable wrench, but if your welding with gas the most important thing is turning on your regulator so you gas flows! It will also come in handy as you may need to create mechanical joints within your work – so securing things will be easy.

#6 Square

Just as important as making sure all your measurements are exact and cut to the right length, you want to make sure your welds are finished on square pieces – this will ensure your project does not come out unlevel or odd shaped.

Now there are two types of squares I want to mention here: a speed square and a larger fixed square.

A speed square is good for small projects and is super handy to keep around the shop. It’s only a few bucks and worth every penny.

A larger square, also known as a framing square is good because it will ensure your corners and layouts are true on larger projects like tables, banisters, shelving, etc.

#7 Wire Snips

You’ll definitely need a pair of wire snips if your MIG welding. There are just two requirements for a good wire snipper: 1) make sure it’s sharp and 2) Don’t forget #1. A sharp snipper will ensure you have a clean cut on your wire every time. This is important because you don’t want your arc to stay off – it will cause your bead to be all over the place.

#8 Grinder

A good grinder is necessary for cutting, beveling and finishing your metal projects. A good grinder will come with several attachments and will have enough power to work with heavier gauge metals. If your working with softer metals like aluminum or you just want to save some money, a good file will work.

#9 Marking Tool

There are two schools of thought here: if your only doing rough fabrication and nothing that needs to be specific, a sharpie will work well to mark your metal for cutting.

I disagree. A sharpie can make an error of ⅛” or so – imagine if you’re assembling a chair and one leg is just a bit longer then all the others – or shorter – that’s going to be one chair I don’t want to sit on! Instead, practice using a scribe and a machinist square. You’ll get a more precise line – and a more precise cut and fit for your projects.

#10 Fire Extinguisher

Safety first! When your welding your working with fire, and sparks are known to go everywhere. An extinguisher only costs a few bucks and could save your life. Don’t skimp on this tool.

Doesn’t Welding Require A Welder?

Yes! There is a good reason why I left this off my list. First, you may want to Stick Weld, TIG Weld or MIG weld – I have no idea what your preference would be, but I can recommend a good welder to start off with!

Also, your budget might be super tight, and in order to learn to weld and build your skill, the best thing would be to rent a welder, and that means you’ll only be able to select whatever machine is in stock.

I would recommend if you have the budget, buy an entry-level welder. You can always upgrade later – or keep your welder as a backup in case your new one is giving you trouble or needs repair.
